Changing careers can be an intimidating enterprise, but it should never discourage you from taking the leap. I decided to seize the day and take a chance on my future. That's when I stumbled into the world of Assistive Technology (AT) and the amazing work that access: technology strives to achieve.
A little about me
My name is Erin, and I started working at access: technology in May 2025. Previously, I led Functional Skills courses at several Alternative Provision Providers and studied Psychology (BSc) and Computational Neuroscience and Cognitive Robotics (MSc) at the University of Birmingham. In my spare time, I am vice chair of an inclusive FC called the Wigston Foxes and hold the role of 'Player Registration Officer' within the Leicestershire Junior and Youth League.
First Impressions
My interest in Assistive Technology comes from a desire to make a tangible difference. Whether it's helping a student access the curriculum more inclusively or enabling someone to communicate for the first time, AT has the power to change lives both for the client and their wider support network. It sits at the crossroads of innovation and empathy—two things I value deeply. For me, applying to work for access: technology has been far more than just a career move; it's been an opportunity to help bridge gaps, remove barriers, and empower individuals through technology.
Starting the new role
Starting something new is always a little nerve-wracking. But starting work at access: technology feels like stepping into a community where purpose drives progress. I’m excited, I’m inspired, and I’m ready to contribute to the company's goals. During my time shadowing the current team, I have met clients and professionals, all striving towards the same values, and it has been amazing to be a part of. I am excited to see where this role takes me!
I have had the opportunity to learn about various topics, including Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), accessible gaming, and reasonable adjustments, among others. More importantly, though, I have a deeper understanding of why AT can make such a difference, not only to the client's quality of life but also to their wider support network.
Final Thoughts
Investing in others starts with investing in yourself, and while it can be scary and challenging, finding a career and/or a company whose ethos aligns with your own can make everything feel a little bit brighter. I have loved my time so far as an AT consultant and encourage anyone reading this to invest in their own personal and professional development!
