The role

access: technology is a specialist assistive technology (AT) consultancy. We work with children and adults with brain injury and complex disability, mostly in medico-legal cases, alongside case managers, deputies and solicitors.

As an AT Consultant you visit clients in person, assess what they need, set up and adapt the technology, and train the people around them. You write clear reports and work alongside case managers, therapists and families. The aim is quality of life and rehabilitation. Technology is how we get there.

You run your own diary and caseload and own your recommendations, with weekly planning, supervision and case discussion behind you.

What you'll do

  • Visit clients in person at home, school, work and care settings.
  • Assess and agree clear AT priorities.
  • Plan structured interventions, with scheduled reviews.
  • Set up AAC, eye gaze, switches, environmental controls, smart home, computers and mounting.
  • Train families, carers, schools and care teams to carry the work on.
  • Write clear reports that stand up to legal scrutiny.
  • Work with case managers, therapists and the wider team.

A typical week: 4 or more client visits in person, often about 2 hours each; travel, counted as working time (we aim for no more than 40% of time on average); planning and writing plans, reports and records; a weekly planning meeting and supervision; and updates to case managers, families and therapists.

What we're looking for

  • A degree in a relevant field, such as education, SEN, OT, SaLT, physiotherapy, psychology or neuroscience. A degree in another subject also counts if you have strong relevant experience. A relevant postgraduate degree, such as an MSc in assistive technology or education, also counts, whatever your first degree.
  • Strong evidence of relevant experience, such as work with disabled children or adults, or people with complex needs.
  • A high standard of written communication: clear written English.
  • Technical confidence and a liking for practical problems.
  • Good organisation. You plan ahead.
  • Sound safeguarding knowledge.
  • A full UK driving licence and your own car.
  • Eligibility for an enhanced DBS check.
  • You must already have the right to work in the UK.

Helpful, but we'll train the right person:

  • Experience of brain injury, spinal injury or cerebral palsy.
  • AAC, eye gaze, switches or alternative access.
  • Environmental control, mounting or positioning.
  • Medico-legal report writing.

What we offer

  • Bonus scheme, taken as pay or flexi-time.
  • Company pension.
  • Laptop, phone and iPad.
  • Holiday that grows with service, your birthday off and a mental health day.
  • Structured induction with joint visits from the start, core training, CPD and a route to Senior Consultant.

Location and salary

Home-based, with office space provided close to you when you need it. Client visits are in person, in clients' homes, schools, workplaces and care settings.

Location: Home-based in England, with the South East, South Central or Midlands preferred.

  • £35,000 a year (Consultant) or £40,000 (Senior Consultant), depending on experience. Full-time.
  • 35 hours a week, flexible because you manage your own diary.
  • 55p per mile for client travel, from your home. Travel time counts as working time.

We recruit all year round. If your application is successful, we'll be in touch about the next stage.
